Activities - KHMER BOXING CLUB
Cambodia prides itself with a very ancient tradition of Martial Arts that in the past made the strength of its immense Empire. Terres Rouges Lodge is therefore very pleased to introduce you to this world through our Khmer Boxing Club called “Ratanak Eisan”, the “Gem of the North East”
Saseth is a Khmer Boxing champion with a background of ten years of competition at the highest Cambodian level; he is our “in house teacher”. With him you will be able to discover this Martial Art or go deeper in your techniques if you are already an adept.
Khmer Boxing
Even if quite similar to Muay Thay in many aspects, Khmer Boxing is yet typically Cambodian. For Cambodians, Thai people just “marketed” this discipline coming straight from the Khmer Empire. The whole world now knows the name “Muay Thai” but ignores the very existence of Khmer Boxing. Prodal Serey (Kun Khmer or Khmer Boxing) is a martial art that was codified in the middle of the XXth century by the French Protectorate. As a matter of fact all forms of Asian boxing were codified in the same way at the same period of time… Kun Khmer distinguishes itself by a much more radical style than the other Asian boxing disciplines. Immediate efficiency is the goal. Clinch, elbow techniques and “flying knees” on top of fists and legs techniques, are much more frequent than in the other Asian boxing styles. Furthermore a few rules favoring clinching and strikes during the opponent’s fall are specific to Khmer boxing.
Cambodia’s youth is literally fascinated by Khmer boxing; tournaments are aired live on five channels on the National TV network (TV5, CTN, TV3, Bayon, Apsara tv). There are fights every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
For people wishing to discover Kun Khmer or simply to better their physical condition, Ratanak Eisan Club offers sessions ranging from a day to a week or a month.
On the program: jogging, physical training and apprenticing of basic techniques. Our training sessions are adapted to everyone’s age and physical condition.
Two sessions : one in the morning and one in the evening. Around 2 hours each time.
For whom ? This club is for passionate boxers who are longing for a new experience. It’s the ideal place for a final preparation for a fight on a mental or physical level. We also welcomes less experienced passionate boxers if they come with openness, a good physical level and are ready to train seriously.
Already men, women and children regularly train in this atypical club. The club The club has all the necessary equipment for training seriously. Basic but sufficient, our equipment is housed under a big metal roof: a makeshift ring, hitting bags, physical exercise spots and all around, loads of tracks for running. Even if the club is indeed located within Terres Rouges Lodge it is not luxurious either, we want to maintain a traditional way of training! Kun Khmer Training The aim is to train seriously among a small group. Everybody’s participation is important as well as a good team spirit.
The camp welcomes but a few foreigners who then mix with the Khmer fighters and trainers, it enables a friendly atmosphere and a tough training. From Monday to Saturday : 5h30 - 8h30 16h00 - 18h00
We start the day by 10km of jogging in the hills surrounding Banlung (optional if you want a lighter kind of training). We then come back to the club for some stretching and carry on with Kun Khmer training techniques: skipping rope, jumping on old tires, physical exercises, shadow boxing, working the bag… techniques (fists / feet / knees / elbows / hand to hand…) more stretching and meditation. Kun Kru learning ( ritual dance that boxers do before each fight).
Conviviality Our Ratanak Eisan Club is open to all Terres Rouges residents who wish to watch the training sessions and seize the opportunity to take pictures of this important aspect of Khmer culture.
Competition Our Fighters regularly take part in competitions in Phnom Penh to face the country’s elite. They are then coached by our team of local and foreign champions.
